BIOGRAPHY
Thembi's thespian and choreographic experience embraces both stage and
screen. In 1975 Thembi began her dance career with IPI NTOMBI,
by Bertha Egnos, as one of the original cast members, and toured Nigeria,
Israel, Ghana, Great Britain, Ireland, America, New Zealand, Scandinavia,
France, Germany.
The 1980s saw her furthering her dance and choreographic career in a variety
of traditional African musical productions. In 1985, Thembi was part
of AMAMPONDO as a choreographer, vocalist and lead dancer. AMAMPONDO performed
at the National Arts Festival in Glasgow, in 1986, and in 1987 toured Europe
and performed in Hong Kong. She received a Best Dancer Award with AMAMPONDO
in 1988 in Bournemouth, England. In 1988 AMAMPONDO was performed
at Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday concert. Thembi also performed in SEKUNJALO
as a dancer and vocalist with Hugh Masekela's National South African Tour
in 1991.
From the late 1980s Thembi appeared in film and television roles including
the 1989 Agatha Christie film DEATH IN SAFARI, and in 1991 had a leading
role in "UMASHEZI" (South Africa's 'Dynasty' series in 13 episodes).
Thembi also appeared in VIVA FAMILY, a TV educational program (1992);
in KWASKHALA NYONINI, she starred as 'Beauty' in the 1993 TV Drama Series
(13 Episodes) for which she received a Best Television Actress Drama Award,
and she featured in Woman's Talk, a cultural cross-over program.
Television and film appearances from the early 1990s onwards include being
interviewed as an actress in LEARNING THE HARD WAY for M-NET's New Direction
series; working in the documentary TEENS ON A TIGHTROPE (for which Thembi
received a Best Supporting Actress Award); appearing in a German film
production, CAPE OF GOOD HOPE; working on CHATTER BOX, a children's program;
and SAKHISIZWE a television court-room drama.
Thembi has also been involved in scriptwriting for television and in research
for educational and children's programs; she has also conducted research for
Population Development. Her other television and screen credits include local
television productions, the international feature film "A REASONABLE MAN",
and numerous Arts Festivals, including the Houston International Festival.
Thembi has also been involved in cultural exchange events between South Africa
and China, the Seychelles and Saudi Arabia.
In 1992, Thembi and Todd Twala created the show, BAOBAB. This was the
forerunner to UMOJA which came to fruition in the year 2001. Thembi received
the Best Costume Design for UMOJA. The show won the
prestigious First National Bank VITA AWARD for Best Musical Production and
the First National Bank VITA AWARD for Best Review in 2001
Thembi's community upliftment activities extend towards disadvantaged
youngsters in the community. She co-ordinates dance classes for neighbourhood
youth and has been involved in voluntary fund raising for the Children's Fund.
