Murray McGibbon was born in Durban, South Africa on 26 June 1957. He is the son of Amy McGibbon and the late James W. McGibbon MPC, and brother to Carolyn and Jeanette. He married the former Ashley Fisher in 1993, and together they have one son, James William McGibbon, and a daughter, Catherine Elizabeth McGibbon. Regrettably, the couple separated in September 2004.

Educated at Maritzburg College, the University of Natal and Southern Illinois University (USA), Prof. McGibbon initially qualified as a teacher in 1979. In 1983 he was selected as one of four South Africans from 2000 nominees to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for graduate study in the United States of America. He received his Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre, with specialisations in Acting, Directing and Theatre Administration from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1987. He was named Outstanding Graduate Theatre Student of 1987 by the University. He is listed in the American Biographical Association publications "Five Thousand Personalities of America", "The International Directory of Distinguished Young Leadership", and "Most Admired Men and Women of the Year, 1993".

After completing his initial teacher training, Prof. McGibbon underwent his National Service. His basic training was completed at 1 Infantry Battalion, Oudtshoorn and later at 11 Commando, Kimberley. Thereafter he was posted to 31BN in the Operational Area where he saw active service and taught at the battalion training school. In 1981, he was transferred to Natal Command, Durban and taught at the Edendale Technical Institute. Prof. McGibbon was appointed to the staff of Maritzburg College in January 1982 where he co-founded the first department of Speech and Drama at a boys' high school in South Africa. He left teaching in 1985 to undertake his graduate studies abroad.

While in America, Prof. McGibbon was a graduate teaching assistant in the Department of Theatre at Southern Illinois University, and in 1985 was invited to assume the post of Publicity and Marketing Director for McLeod Theatre on the campus. While his thesis work was concentrated on the art of Directing he also took courses in theatre administration and marketing with his thesis director, Dr Alfreds Straumanis, and studied scenography under the Checkoslovakian designer, Milan Palec. His tutors included Cash Baxter and George Pinney.

Passionate about the performing arts, Prof. McGibbon has had extensive experience in all aspects of theatre as an actor, designer, producer, publicist, director, manager and administrator. Many of his productions were directed for his own theatre company - Presto Theatre Productions, which he established in Pietermaritzburg in 1978. As Manager of the Loft Theatre Company for NAPAC, in Durban, South Africa, Prof. McGibbon enjoyed considerable personal success in directing the South African Premieres of Larry Kramer's acclaimed AIDS play, THE NORMAL HEART, Ken Campbell's FRANK 'N' STEIN, Manuel Puig's KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN and Shirley Lauro's A PIECE OF MY HEART.

He was awarded the prestigious South African Airways "Young Artist of the Year Award" in 1989 and in 1994 received two VITA Awards - Best Director for MASTER HAROLD...AND THE BOYS and Best Production for his revival of FRANK 'n STEIN. His production of EQUUS won the 1995 VITA for Best Production in KwaZulu/Natal. He was invited by the British High Commission to produce and direct A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, a gala variety performance in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh for the Royal State Visit to South Africa in 1995.

In 1990, Prof. McGibbon was appointed to the post of Director of Drama for NAPAC (now The Playhouse Company- one of South Africa's largest professional theatre companies), the youngest person ever to be appointed to such a post in South Africa. He made a measurable contribution to the performing arts in his native country. Acknowledged as a creative and innovative director, he was a visionary administrator and mover within the arts community in KwaZulu/Natal and a highly respected "ideas man". He is credited with the establishment of The Loft Schools' Company and the Playhouse Puppet Company.

The Playhouse Cookbook, which he compiled reached the national best-seller list, while the Pay What You Can scheme, which he introduced in 1990, has been copied nationwide. Elected by the non-unionised staff of NAPAC, he served on the ECON Committee which spearheaded the transformation of the arts council. He was the only artistic director to have his contract renewed by the new Board and management when NAPAC was restructured. His commitment to education and development is well documented, with the Playhouse Drama Department cited as the role model within the country at the time. He travelled extensively for the company, both within Southern Africa and abroad.

In 1996, Prof. McGibbon accepted an invitation from Indiana University to join their faculty as a Visiting Professor of Theatre. After resigning from The Playhouse Company, he has now made his association with Indiana University more permanent. He currently holds the rank of Tenured Associate Professor.

Prof. McGibbon's recreational interests include horse-riding, puppetry, silkscreen printing and magic. He represented South Africa at the 1982 Federation International des Societes Magiques (FISM) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He is a member of the South African Magical Society, the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Magician's Club of London. He is particularly fond of the African bush, Shakespeare, wine, gardening, kite flying, travel to exotic destinations and being busy!
