BIOGRAPHY
Marcus Desando who recently directed a ground breaking new contemporary
interpretation of Verdi's Rigoletto for Cape Town Opera to great acclaim
started his singing career with PACT in 1987 and joined their permanent
chorus under Mathilda Hornsveld in 1991; his career as a singer include
Operas like 'Turandot', 'Marriage of Figaro', 'Zauberflöte',
'Lucia di Lammermoor', 'Entfürung aus dem Serail',
'Madamme Butterfly', 'The Merry Widow',
'La bohème', 'il Matrimonio segreto'
and many more.
Marcus also sang Sportin' Life in 'Porgy and Bess' for Cape Town Opera in
South Africa, Germany and Sweden and also the same role in the
New York Harlem Production's tour of Europe and Scandinavia,
followed by Old Deuteronomy in Pieter Toerien and
Really Useful Company's Cape Town season and subsequent world tour
of 'Cats'. Piangi in 'The Phantom of the Opera' on
the Really Useful Group's world tour. Also Zodzetrick in Cape Town Opera's
'Treemonisha' in Cape Town and La Turbie, France.
He has also sung in world premieres of South African works such
as 'Enoch', 'Prophet of God', 'Sacred Bones', 'La Bohème: Noir'
and 'Love & Green Onions'. His oratorio performances include 'Messiah',
'Passion of Christ', Schubert's 'Mass' in E flat and Mozart's 'Requiem'
and Beethoven's 'Symphony No 9'
As an Assistant Director he worked on production like 'Aida', 'L'elisir D'amore',
'Porgy and Bess', 'Barber of Seville', 'Marriage of Figaro', 'La bohème'
to name but a few.
In 2005 Marcus made his Directorial debut on the professional opera stage
with 'Gianni Schicchi' for Cape Town Opera and the Eoan Group
in Cape Town and subsequently co-directed Janice Honeyman's 'Starbrite'
at Artscape and Directed 'Porgy and Bess' for its premiere in Nairobi, Kenya
in 2007. He has also Directed 'Dido' & 'Aeneas'' for the
University of Stellenbosch, 'Carmen' and 'La Boheme'
for Tswane University of Technology.
Other engagements for 2008 include Directing 'Don Giovanni'
for Cape Town Opera and UCT Opera School.
