BIOGRAPHY

With a 21 year career behind him, Bryan Schimmel has positioned himself as one of the leading Musical Directors, Arrangers, Conductors and Pianists in South Africa working in theatre, special events, recording and television across a full spectrum of music.

His vast roster of theatrical productions includes CHICAGO, WE WILL ROCK YOU, RENT and THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, all with international creative teams. Other productions include THE LAST FIVE YEARS, BIG BAND BLAST, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, AIN'T MISBEHAVIN', JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, A TOUCH OF WEBBER - A TASTE OF RICE, and most recently KNIGHTS OF MUSIC.

He composed the theme music for THE GARETH CLIFF SHOW that recently completed its first season on M-Net. Last year he arranged the music for and conducted a 60 piece orchestra for the BIDVEST CEO Awards. Other major events include Musical Direction and Arrangements for The City of Johannesburg Welcome to MISS WORLD 2008, VODACOM CEO Awards 2003, 2004 and 2008, BIDVEST 2008, MISS WORLD 1992 and 1993, four MISS SOUTH AFRICA pageants, Nelson Mandela's 85th Birthday, and performing before Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 1995.

Together with Ian von Memerty, Bryan co-created and co-starred in the first 350 performances of the massively successful, multi award winning A HANDFUL OF KEYS, which, after 15 years and over 1000 performances, continues to make perennial returns to the stage.

Other diverse ventures include lecturing 3rd and 4th year Composition students in Arranging at WITS University School of Arts Music Division, composing new music for strings to play with the powerhouse percussion group 1st Project and being Musical Director for new Universal recording artist Elan Lea.

Bryan's talents have taken him all over the world: He worked on Broadway in David Kramer's KAT AND THE KINGS, Off-Broadway in WHEN PIGS FLY and NAKED BOYS SINGING, toured America with a production of MEET ME IN ST LOUIS, had the pleasure of working with Academy Award winning composer Stephen Schwartz on CHILDREN OF EDEN at North Shore Music Theatre in Massachusetts, he conducted CRAZY FOR YOU in Basel, Switzerland, and toured to Edinburgh with a production of CLOSER THAN EVER. He traveled to New Zealand and Korea as Music Supervisor of the 2008 Asian tour of WE WILL ROCK YOU.

Bryan is a five time Naledi Theatre Award nominee. He is the recipient of a Vita Theatre award for A HANDFUL OF KEYS, and two Naledi Theatre Awards for Musical Direction of CHICAGO and Musical Supervision and Arrangements of KNIGHTS OF MUSIC.

Most recently, Bryan was honoured with the King David Schools Foundations' David Award for Considerable Contribution to Performing Arts.
